Our Story

Basement Gelato’s story began in early 2023 in the Italian city of Bologna. Our founder, Austin, left behind his corporate career to pursue a lifelong dream: building a gelato brand in his home city of Edinburgh.

During his time in Bologna, Austin learned how to create gelato completely from scratch — understanding the science behind what makes gelato as perfect as it can be, and developing a deep respect for the quality and balance of every ingredient used.

All of our dairy is locally sourced, just four miles from our store. Following the seasons as closely as possible remains one of the core strategies in our kitchen, allowing the best ingredients to shine.

Fast forward to today, and we’ve produced over 200 different flavours in our Basement kitchen — from classics like rich Belgian chocolate to one of our best-sellers, Brown Butter, alongside our ever-evolving range of dairy-free and vegan gelatos.

Beyond our Queensferry Street home, you can hire us to serve gelato at weddings, corporate events, and summer festivals — bringing a little taste of Basement to your special occasion.
